I really never gave it much thought - not many do I guess. We drive, we cook, we heat, we turn on the lights, we don't plug out, we turn on multiple appliances, we fly. Everyday stuff - no worries. Consume on! But every action has a reaction. So I have decided to take some responsibility and become more energy aware. One thing I looked at was lighting.
15 - 20% of the world's energy consumption goes on lighting creating 1.9 billion tonnes of CO2 annually. If we all changed to LED lighting this could be reduced by an estimated 50-70%**.
LEDs convert up to 80% of energy into light. This both reduces electricity costs and dramatically reduces carbon emissions.
Take a look at a 5W LED GU10 bulb typically found in your kitchen. In comparison to a 50W equivalent there is a saving of 21kg Co2 output per 1000 hours usage*. I changed 15 in the kitchen. We light those for easily 5 hours a day, year round. Every 10 days means there are 21kg less emissions - just from my little kitchen lights. On a 10W LED bulb which is equivalent to a 60W halogen there is a Co2 output difference of 23kg per 1000 hours*.
LEDs also have longer life - meaning less going to landfill. For one LED bulb you will replace 5 CFLs or 30 incandescents. Because there is no heat emitted - you can also save on air conditioning.
Its a small change - don't stop there.
