"The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) currently reports the agri-food sector in Ireland contributes a value of €24 billion to the national economy, generates 6.3% of gross value added, almost 10% of Ireland’s exports and provides 7.7% of national employment. When employment inputs, processing and marketing is included, the agri-food sector accounts for almost 10% of employment" so says Teagasc. Impressive! Figures relate to food production, fishing and forestry as well as agriculture.
We have 139,829 farms here as per the census of 2010 with just over half (53.9pc) of all farm owners surveyed saying farming was their sole occupation.
Farmers are clearly very important to Ireland. They deserve to be treated well.
Why is it, that many organisation leaders seem to disproportionately put their own self interest ahead of the good of those they should serve?
